I have a LBF skybox car for boeing. It was the only car at the LHS that was special ordered. I might stop in during the week to see if they can get anymore. But I'de like to know if there are other manufacturers out there besides the former LBF stuff? Were those long flatcars for the body ever made?

Just FYI,

I've heard from more then one Boeing employee that the fuselages require sheet metal repair for bullet holes once they get to final assembly.

Oh yeah, NICE FREAKIN JOB!! Amazing work.

Back when I worked for a wireless ISP, we had to climb about every 6 months to repair heliax. So pot shots at trains really doesn't surprise me much.

Man I'm lucky to even get a shot at a deer when I'm in the woods let alone a train. :p  :D

Great model Paul.

That's a lot of work, Paul. Looks like it will be a very impressive model once you finish the detail. I've always been surprised that Boeing shipped those fuselages with no protection. It seems like bullet holes and rock damage is almost a given with that big hunk of metal exposed.

Very nice work Paul.......I couldn't find any mention of scale.....I'm guessing HO? I have an N scale one I have to the "use it, but not done " stage, and I don't see my detail ever getting as good as yours. It still draws lots of attention at our NTrak setups.
Steve.......The cars used for the fuselage cars aren't anything special. Just plain old 89' flats with some special pieces added on....the cradle, the front support, and the icebreaker on the front. As Paul noted there seem to be 2 versions of the tail cars, one 89' and one 60'..... I've also seen them come thru with just a plain old flatcar in between (no box), and once I saw one come thru with every other fuselage turned the opposite direction and an 89' flat between. I don't think that's common though, since they don't seem to turn these cars very often.... I normally see them come thru loaded with the icebreakers on the west end of the cars, and a week or so later, I'll see them headed back east empty with the icebreakers still on the west end of the cars.
I don't know for sure, but my guess is that any cover they'd build for these would result in a width that would put the loads into a special "oversize" catagorie......these seem to be able to run in with the normal consists now. I also don't know how you'd build a cover to fit over the 2 cars it takes to haul these....and I don't think a single 130' car is an option. I guess that it's cheaper to fix a few bullet holes than to deal with these problems/costs.

the 2 cars i won stated in the auction that they wouldn't have couplers or trucks. ok whatever. they have nothing basically. no weights, no decals, no instructions. I bought new 100T genesis trucks and had to work on them to fit the odd bolster on the flat car. had to remove glue or whatever the stuff is that held the weights to pull apart the underframe.

anyone know where i can get some boeing decals for the sides?

Bummer on your cars, but they're getting real hard to find, so I guess any skybox is a good skybox. I can understand you wanting decals, but very few skyboxes are labeled.......in fact I don't remember seeing more than 1 or 2 in the last year. In fact I wish my 3 that say Boeing were unlabeled ......don't really care about Boeing, but they also say "another shipment of 747 parts". Most skyboxes seem to just be plain old boxcar red.

what i discovered last night in a google search was a site that sells them in N scale. Apparently they are offered in just the tuscan red which I have, tuscan red with a big white boeing logo or the ATSF flat with the large SP boeing logo. So I guess no need to be annoyd now that i know they came that way. But i also found that adair shops makes weight upgrades for these cars so i will be ordering those shortly along with kadee #156's (longer shank) cause the ones on the rtr version i bought new are wayyy to short.

Now if that one member who made those 89' flats for the fuelsalage would maybe make a mold of the plane clamp/holder ;) then i'de model the flat .

That would be great if someone made a holder....the problem is it sort of needs to be a "package deal". There aren't any 1/160th planes (or 1/87 to my knowlege)to put on the car either. I used a 1/144th on mine, which works (barely.....it looks good, but has width issues with tunnel portals, bridges, ect. that are on the narrow side) but obviously needs an oversized mount to carry it. A "correct" , to scale mount wouldn't fit my plane. I guess you could model an empty car, but I tried running mine without the plane, and nobody could figure out what it was.

I'm working on it and now that I am getting laid off next month I will have more time. I am hoping to offer the cradle as a spun cast part similiar to what DW offers. If there is an airplane on the car it will be very easy and probably one piece because the plane covers most of the complicated bits. Empty is a whole different story and I don't know how to do that. Yet.

I think the plane is nearly ready to cast, I haven't worked on it for awhile, and I am working on some drawings for the tail cars. It is surprising how easy it is to scratchbuild cars. Anyway, I am hoping for around Thanksgiving unless I find a real job with hours as crazy as the last one.
