Thinking about going with Woodland Scenics, Scenic Ridge Layout....
But i was wondering if anyone has done this kit and if it's worth it, or should i just but everything piece by piece? Not planning on doing a lot of switching, just want something good to look at and will gain me knowledge in most the aspects.

The layout kit itself is a lot of money to pay for something you can do yourself for a lot less. If you've never built a layout in your life, it might be a good alternative but, if you have any layout experience, you can build a 3x6 for less than half the price. What is a good deal is the 13 building structure package you can buy for around $100.

I agree with the above statement 100%! Woodland Scenics stuff is really nice, but although there is more research you'd have to do yourself, building your OWN layout even if you built a design that has already been featured in Model Railroader before (101 trackplans book) you'd learn alot more, and pay ALOT less. I was going to do the whole scenic ridge thing too at one time. Don't think it would have been a mistake, but I would be much happier having to put more effort into having something really pretty!...(And of course save lots of money!)

Might I also add, but I'm not too sure if you have any model railroad clubs close to you, but that is an even BETTER way to learn lots of things! I am currently part of one, and its my second so far. I have learned everything from installing decoders, to laying track, and from installing (realistic looking) bridges to operations of really large layouts! Last club charged $50 a year for unlimited access to a HUGE layout! At any rate, if a club of any sort is available to you, you could look into that direction! Personally, I think that was the most product I've EVER got for what most of us would spend on one or two basic structures!

Lastly, if not too much interested in the fellowship of other model railroaders, or you just don't have a club or even a good hobby shop close to you for supplies, then the Scenic Ridge could be a really cool project. Hope this helps! Good luck and keep us posted!

Another thing to check out is the local NMRA Division. This is another good way to meet fellows modelers in the area.
