The reason for the voltage difference is that rechargeable cells run at 1.2 volt, while standard/Alkaline cells run at 1.5. On a standard 9volt battery there are 6 cells which makes the standard battery 9 volt. But for rechargeable it makes them 8.4 volt. Powerex and one or 2 more manufacturers add a 7th cell which brings the voltage up to 9.6.
