Tks vmuch. I'm new enough that I am not sure how to start a new thread. (This one came up when I did a site search.)

While waiting for my ESU 59420, I used a Lenz Gold to make sure everything was working properly. (So as not to blow another sound decoder or LED!).

I've now replaced the LED in the front headlight. A 3mm LED with the front of it flattened with some fine sandpaper fitted perfectly. Threaded the leads through the holes in the headlight casting, bent the leads down, reinstalled the casting and connected the leads in the smokebox. All works fine now.

I also took the opportunity of having everything apart to install a rear headlight on the tender.

Attached are photos to show the LED Leads connected inside the smokebox and the tender prep for the speaker and ESU.

If I can figure out how to start a thread, I'll do one for the project.

I just wouldn’t buy any new models unless it’s their new Hudsons
I have not seen that announcement. What prototype is it? I have already ordered 2 of the Broadway Limited Santa Fe Hudsons which maybe might arrive this year.

Edit - just went and looked it up. The NYC J-3 Hudson of course.....

Is this a Bachmann Spectrum 4-4-0 - which one? If so, I have replaced my Spectrum 4-4-0 American decoder with a TCS and sound, but I left the front headlight LED provided by Bachmann - improved performance and sound significantly!

Yes. The Spectrum Modern 4-4-0. I think it came out in the late 1990's or early 2000s.

I have started a separate thread as others on this thread had suggested.

The title is: "Bachmann Modern 4-4-0 (American): Installing a Sound Decoder"

The first instalment deals with deconstruction.

Ok, that timing sounds about right for when Bachmann released them. I bought mine as a second-hand at a hobby shop. It wasnt in the greatest condition - I did a full decoder replacement, stripped the boiler paint and repainted it. I also went through and readjusted all the details, added a few more, applied decals, and finished it off with figures/coal.

I thought I had made a thread about it on this site, but I guess not. You’ll find it at Model Train Forum:
