My hobby shop dealer sells Atlas locomotives. How are they? I have been extremely pleased with Athearn Genesis. Should I consider Atlas?

I live not too far from the Cajon Pass where BNSF is common. I am considering a decent diesel locomotive beading this road name. I am considering an Atlas.

I have about 30 Atlas locos old (old meaning kato/atlas) and new they are superb running machines and great pullers!!!!! nufff said there!

I am very pleased with my silver series locos. They are very easy to install decoders in, although the shells can be a pain to get off. They are fairly cheap and imo good quality engines. I can only voch for the siver and gold series as I haven't had other models.

I have an atlas U28? It is a great runner and very quiet. It can pull good, has nice details, and over all is just as good as my Proto 2000 diesels. It was DCC ready and a simple decoder can be installed without wireing. the shells can be a PITA to get them off as I recall the couplers need to be removed first. I am happy with them and plan to buy some of the RS3 they have

I only have one Atlas, a Gold Series (DCC/w sound) H24-66 Train Master from Fairbanks-Morse. I like it very much. If it is at all representative of their typical product line, you can't go wrong.

I have several Atlas locos and am quite pleased with their performance. Decoders are easy to install. Sound decoders are a bit tougher because Atlas puts a lot of weight in their models. If you can get one with sound built in, that would be the better choice.

My hobby shop dealer has an Atlas Silver BSNF diesel on sale for 69.99. It was marked down nearly 50%. If I remember correctly, It had steps in front leading to the cab. I can't remember the model though. I already had my mind made up on a Genesis SF F-7 A/B he let me have for $170. I'm going there tomorrow, and I might just buy one of the on sale BNSF Atlas Silver locomotives.

BTW, what's the differnce between an Atlas Gold and a Silver model?

What would be a good model BNSF locomotive to own? I want to pick up one that resembles those which traverse the Cajon Pass. Maybe a Dash model?

That DASH 8-40B in the BNSF warbonnet scheme would look right at home on Cajon. If you've got the money, the Gold series is a pretty nice deal, with everything installed and an excellent sound system.

UP2CSX,

Thanks for the info. I do like the warbonnet scheme of BNSF. I might just buy that Atlas model tomorrow. I am not sure if my hobby shop dealer carries the Gold line. But all-in-all, he has pretty good stuff...especially for being in San Bernardino! If he does have the Gold line, I will look into it. And he does offer pretty good deals.

Take care,

Tom

For a locomotive seen around Cajon, An Atlas B40-8, GP30, GP35, GP38 (and dash 2), C30-7, in the green and orange, or yellow warbonnet, An Athearn GP60M or Altas B40-8W in red and silver warbonnet.

Geeee UP, you live in San Bernardino with the Cajon Pass right out your front door, and you want to build a model railroad. That's about like working in a 5 star restaurant and wanting to go home for lunch. 8-)

Ken, that's Tom that lives in Berdoo. I lived in the San Gabriel Valley area of LA for about 10 years from 1967 to 1977 and Cajon was one of my haunts. It was a lot more fun being a railfan in Cajon then. :(

Ooopps. thanks Jim. Just reading a little to fast.

I've had opportunities to go up into the pass while on business travel to the west coast. I never grow tired of it.

Sorry Switch for kinda hijacking the OT.

Atlas is high quality no matter what scale. I've had them all (scales), just happens that O scale is much easier to work on. lol

I did leave about a hundred eighty bucks at my hobby shop dealer this afternoon. I picked up a couple ATSF tanker cars, another UTLX 30k tanker car, a "beer can" tanker car, and 3 ATSF piggyback cars. I looked at the Atlas BNSF diesel that was on sale for seventy bucks. It just did not appeal to me. I will hold out for a Dash-8 model...when I can find one.
