I saw a bunch of the Athearn "Beer Can" tankcars at the hobby shop on Friday, so I just had to pick one up.
Where's the spout? What kind of beer?

Microbrew of course!
aww they're kinda cute. Little baby tankers.
Of course they probably cost 25 bucks each. I am just bitter because I need tank cars and the modern style ones are just out of my budget.
Are these different from the Walthers versions? They look identical to the one that I have, or at least based on the same prototyle unit.
They are a totally different style from the MDC/Roundhouse versions which are an older style, I have a couple dozen of them.
The thing I like about short cars (beer cans, cement hoppers...) is that you can run more cars to make a train look longer than it really is!
I have one and it's very nice. Beer Can is a nick name and has nothing to do with the use. A google search will show the typical use. The Athearn's are nicely detailed. Mind had a 24 buck price tag at the LHS.
Back a few years ago someone came out w/real beer cans mounted on a nice set of trucks. can't remember who the mfg.'r was or the year.

Walthers.
The kit consisted of end platforms, brake details and IIRC, dome details. The modeler supplied the beer can.
They came out with several "joke" cars over the years. Remember the Oscar and Piker? (Passenger cars only as long as the one three axle truck they were mounted on.)
Jailbox:"Any Crime, Do the Time" (Or something to that effect). A railbox type of car that had jailbars instead of doors. I think it even came with a prisoner decked out in stripes!
A copy of John Allen's Hotbox detector car. Had a set of two rails inside that carried a steel ball. If the ball rolled to far, a circuit was completed and a light came on under the car.
Carey, I saw a set of the Piker cars last year at a train show. he had a price out of reach or I would have bought them.
I remember all those specialty cars except the Hotbox detector car. I musta been someplace else when that 1 came out or not receiving MR magazine.
