Hey guys, I had a question. I've been seeing some old Athearn Blue Box SDP40's show up on Ebay and wanted to know if they are correct on the size of the shells or are they too big like like Athearn old SD45's were?

Does anyone know if Athearn is going to come out with a RTR of the SDP40?

I'm 99.9% sure they have the wide long hood.

Its hard to say if Athearn would release a RTR SDP40. If they did, they would have to redo the shell to the correct width. They are re-releasing the SD45 with a proper hood width, so there is hope.

The scale hood SD45 is based on the Rail Power Products shell, not the old Athearn wide hood.

The SDP-40's were all the wide hood model. Athearn hasn't come out with an RTR SDP unit since the final wide bodies and I haven't heard any rumors about one being made. Atlas has a very accurate SDP-35 if that would suit your purpose.

If you're wondering, yes, they are wide body.

Here's the list of EMD's that I know of with the wide body (I feel like I'm missing one):
SD45
GP9
SDP40
GP35
DD40

I really want to see an updated SDP40 myself.

Thanks guys.

I'm looking because MRL's #290 is a SDP40 and I would like to model it without trying to custom build one.
