ARZC GP20's

The engines were rebuilt and had their turbo removed. Therefor, they have the 2 exhaust stacks much like a GP9 would instead of the single stack like the 20's came with. I understand based on an e-mail i received, it is an air box, i am just wondering what kind and if anyone makes the part.

Jeff, Look at this picture. It shows both exhaust stacks your talking about.

The first unit has the box your asking about. The second unit had the round spark arrestors towards the back on either side of the dynamic brake fan.

Here's the part your looking for. I'll need a bit of modification to make it right.

That's a California combination emissions and noise control stack. The Arizona and California rebuilt the GP-20's for lease to another subsidiary, the California Northern, which ran parts of the old NWP. Since they were rebuilt for operation inside California, they were stuck meeting the current standards. Both exhausts are funneled to this one noise supressor since there wasn't enough room on the roof to put on two of them. I don't have a better picture of it but it looks like a standard exhaust with a sheet metal enclosure and that round metal roof. I've seen them in person but was never where I could get a decent roof picture. You'll only see these types of exhuast stacks on Califronia rebuilds.

Thanks for this information. I think for now, i am going to just leave the 20's with the stock stack on it.

Currently the 2004 and 2005 are now the CLC 700 and 701. They have had their DB removed as well as that stack removed. They now have 2 exhaust stacks like a GP9 would as well as AC units.

Most railroads will rip those California stacks right off if they are no longer going to be used in California. They are hard to maintain because they fill with carbon and it takes a lot of internal ductwork to make it work effectively. It's one of the reasons you rarely see 567 powered rebuilds in California.

Thanks for that info.

EMD GP20 #2002
(26063, 8/60)

Originally Union Pacific #718
Renumbered Union Pacific #488
Sold to South East Coal #2002
Sold to Arizona & California #2002
Sold to National Railway Equipment

Acquired from NRE by Tacoma Municipal Belt Line in 1998
To Tacoma Rail with name change 11/15/99

No longer a "pure" GP20 with a factory-turbocharged 16-567D diesel, the 2002 was rebuilt without a turbocharger for South East Coal.

The 2002 is a former ARZC gp20. Looks like it was rebuilt prior to going to ARZC. This engine still carries that box on it today.

Thanks to a friend of mine helping me to find all this tonight.
