Does anyone understand the concept of why a super long self containted train would be a good "ark" in the extreme cold? I can think of no reason this would even make sense. Seems like static nuclear power plants would work much better, or underground even drilling down to tap the heat of the earth's core.
The reason: A plot. It may be tenuous, but...

It beats walking . The overall plot appears to be vaguely reminiscent of Road Warrior. Post apocalyptic world survivors attempt to reach a survivors paradise / oasis. In between murder and mayhem.
The book maybe better , The train is rerouted by the "switchmen" to a station where the pregnant women are "harvested" for fetuses to supply stem cells to keep the switchmen alive. Synopsis =>
