Amtrak Cab Car #9645 leads off Keystone Train #656 departing Harrisburg on a clear Pennsylvania afternoon.
At one time, Amtrak San Diegans (now known as Pacific Surfliners) ran Amfleet I cab cars in one direction between Los Angeles and either the Goleta/Santa Barbara area or San Diego. In 1995, when California Cars came in, trains started being converted to high-level equipment, and now all eight of the general cycle Surfliners operate with Surfliners/Superliners between San Diego and Los Angeles, Goleta, or San Luis Obispo. There is one set of isolated equipment that just operates from Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo only. It operates Amfleet and Horizon cars but operates the push-mode using a de-motored locomotive control unit (DMLCU) with a compartment in the rear for checked baggage, express shipments, and bicycles.
