Airhorn Info Needed

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

Greetings all. Where can I find or who would know what types of horns were used on specific locomotives and roadnames in conjunction with years of service. I am looking for horn info on GP7,GP9,GP30,GP35,SD35,GP38,GP40 & -2, as well as SD40 as used on the Chessie System throughout its limited life.

That's is a vague question as even thought there might have been a standard horn the RR used you can probably see several different horns on the same model loco as horns get damaged on other RR from hitting trees, get stolen, etc. So if its a modeling question then the best thing is to research each unit separately and go from there. Good Example is the 3 NYS&W SD70M's I have been working on. When new they all had the same horn and now each one has a different horn.

I think that was along the lines he was looking for. I didn't realize there was so much variation, not only in the types of horns, but what is/was actually used.

I think you will find some helpful info in the book "Chesapeake & Ohio Diesel Locomotives" by Carl Shaver and David Gilliland. It covers most of the C&O locos that went to Chessie and has some info on the horns they came with when new.

I'm not sure if there is a similar book for the Western Maryland and B&O locos that ended up in Chessie.
