OK, here is where I really expose my ignorance. Isn't acrylic water based? Would you say solvent based is preferable. What do people mean when they talk about adding mediums. And I thought hand laying track was a challenge.
Acrylic is water based. I have used distilled water, water diluted with 70% & 91% Iso alcohol, water with jet dry from the dish washer, various spray pressures, distance from model, tip/needle adjustments both single and dual action spray brushes with zero success. In all fairness I just started air brushing again after a 30-year hiatus but did not have this much difficulty learning with the very toxic Floquil paints thinned with acetone or lacquer thinner.

Using old tyco and other toy train set cars from garage sales to practice. At least the failures experienced can be washed away.

Someone will come along and answer what I am experiencing and offer some tips because model paint is more expensive than I remember.
 
I usually use Lacquer based paint like Tamiya or Mr Paint for the primer and base coat, then weather in water based like Vallejo or Tamiya Water based. This way if I don't like the weathering it is much easier to remove the water based weathering.
 
Not all acrylics are water based. Vallejo is, as are many others. Tamiya, on the other hand, is an alcohol based based acrylic. There are several other brands of alcohol based acrylics as well.
This is a half hour well spent:

I airbrush with nothing but water based acrylics, mostly Vallejo, and absolutely love them! People tend to give water based acrylics a bad name because they don't understand how to use them properly. Enamels and lacquers can be sprayed directly onto bare plastic in moderately heavy coats. Tamiya, being alcohol based, can be sprayed onto bare plastic, but it still benefits from a primer. Water based acrylics MUST have a primer applied first! The primer must be allowed to cure, not just dry, for 24-48 hours. Then the paint must be applied in repeated light coats, building up the color gradually.

Can water based acrylics give a good finish? You decide.

The TR5-A was painted with Badger ModelFlex acrylics, all the others were done with Vallejo acrylics. And , yes, I built all of them.

Water based acrylics do a fine job. I have known several professional model painters who use them exclusively. I learned on solvent based systems (Floquil and Scalecoat mostly) and most of us default to what we learn with. I've used acrylics. The drying process starts faster than with solvent based paints, and pigments are often ground coarser so larger nozzle diameters and higher pressures are required to spray them. with practice you can get great results with either system, though there is a learning curve when starting with one type and transitioning to the other.

The dollar or so a bottle craft paints in art stores like Hobby Lobby are not designed for spraying. The pigments are ground very coarse. I saw an article in RMC some years back where a guy did spray with them, after mixing in some Liquitex products to get them to flow. It can be done but also gan give you grief unless you are an experienced airbrusher. For me, I don't deal with aggravation very well, so I stick to hobby paints. Life is already too short! :) I do use them as intended, with bristle brushes. Theya re great for wood structures, scenery and so forth.

No one is saying water based paints are not as good as solvent based, but rather that using solvent based for base coat provides the opportunity to freeze ones work at the base coat stage so that when weathering (especially as a newer user) one can revert to that clean base coat more easily if mistakes are made when applying the weathering. Another way is to spray the project with dull or gloss coat prior to weathering. This becomes less of an issue as one gains experience and, of course, someone who becomes an "expert" is able to skip these intermediate steps.

There is no single right way to approach a project.
 
I started out spraying water based stuff and found it to be very frustrating and got mediocre at best results, sometimes to the point I really dreaded using the airbrush. I have a much better understanding of them now, but if you're learning, Tamiya is so comparatively easy to use you can focus on technique initially instead of fighting the brush and paint.

I only have a little pancake compressor too, which I think is part of my frustration since it doesn't give me a lot of pressure to work with.

If your compressor can manage 25-30 psi it should be more than enough. A lot of folks I know use compressors that don't even have a tank so that pancake should exceed requirements. I learned a long time ago so perhaps I've forgotten a lot of the pain of acquiring the needed skills 🤔

I wasn’t suggesting either was better than the other. Not sure how you got that. Acrylics are less toxic of course, and they handle a little differently, but in my experience you can get equally good results with either system. I don’t notice any difference between the two when it comes to weathering. Applying a flat coat for me is generally the first part of the weathering process. Gloss coats may be required for some brands prior to decaling. Stripping off poor weathering is a dice throw. You may damage the finish no matter what your base coat is, or you may not. Same with bad decaling. I’ve used both systems when doing commissioned projects, though I haven’t painted for others in years now. I prefer solvent based because it’s what I learned with. Acrylics offer water based cleanup and low odor, great for apartment dwellers. I don’t advocate either one. It’s a matter of taste. You are correct, there is no “one way”. When teaching airbrushing and in my years as an Iwata dealer I always opened classes and discussion in the booth with this statement. My way isn’t the only way. 😊.

Re compressors: a pancake is fine. I agree, 25-30 PSI gives you the range to spray just about everything hobby. Acrylics in my experience require the higher end of that scale. I’ve shot Alclad lacquers at 8-10 PSI. A good regulator and moisture trap is essential. Pancake units are fine but loud. I use a hobby compressor but I also have a larger unit that will wake the dead when it runs. 🤣. In the end it’s a mater of practice and more practice. A good quality airbrush is important. Beware of some of the Chinese cheapies if you are learning.
 
I haven't put a gauge on my pancake, but based on similarly designed units I've worked with, I'd be surprised if it got beyond 20. I've had a better one in my cart for a while now, but since I've switched to largely spraying Tamiya I haven't been annoyed enough to pull the trigger.

If we're talking about the same thing, a pancake compressor that comes from a big box store like Home Depot or Lowes, they generally go considerably beyond 20 PSI. They are designed to run things like nail guns . The one at my model railroad club is capable of up to 120 PSI. I'd recommend you put a quality regulator on it. You'll notice a big difference immediately.
