Bonafied Grande Nut
If you're a steam fan this is great. If you're a Birmingham District history nut, it's awesome. Once again, a link to Birmingham Rails for "The Final Fires of Birmingham"... http://www.bhamrails.info/final_fires_of_birmingham_01.htm

While there's much local history in this article, note the section on US Pipe & Foundry. During steam's final days, that was the name of the former Sloss, Sheffield Steel and Iron. The article discusses steam at the "City Furnaces", now the Sloss Historical Landmark.

Thanks Eric for this article. When we first moved from Kentucky to Tuscaloosa (1960), my Dad worked for Debardeleben Coal Corp as an electric shovel operator in their surface mine that was up river from the coke plant. When they sold out he went with Peabody Coal Co. as a dragline operator. I was in high school at the time, but never knew there were steamers out at the coke plant. I had heard whistles, but always thought it was lunch time:D . Great History.
