A new beginning...JRs UPRR.

So here we have the progress of the painting 1st coat. I will be doing a second coat. Then install the standard brackets on that wall above the skyline.
You will notice that there is a power/junction box in the wall that was an old thermostat for the electrical base heaters that have since been removed. I will be patching that later or just cover that area with some scenery like trees or a silo or something of that nature.

Looking awesome, Alcomotive, your trains and layout are an inspiration to me !

Thank you! I am but a novice....it has been over 20 years since my last real layout. Although I had a small shelf layout 10 years ago but no scenery. This layout is just temporary until I get my garage expansion done next spring depending on the covid thing and what the economy will be etc.

But.....your laying track. 🤤🤤

Well that track that you see in the pictures is just temp track. I will be laying code 83 track soon. The plastic EZ track is just a pacifier until then. 😎 I have yet to paint the deck (plywood) after the walls are done. I will also be adding foam board, cork road bed and some sheets of cork in various areas. Soon soon it will come to that.

James - You have a fantastic collection and a great start on the new temp layout! :D

I have a book you may be interested in "Union Pacific Motive Power Review 1968-77"

It is definitely out of place in this train house.

Thank you.

I have that book. It is a good one! I have quite the diverse library of books on Union Pacific RR and locomotive manufacturers. Also other RR interests as well.

As for my collection of motive power that's something I take pride in lol I have a diverse amount of UP with fallen flags etc. I do have steam as well but will get those out once the new track is laid down. I just enjoy this hobby helps soothe my soul. So many facets to it you can do just about anything really.

Just wondering what the piece across the pit is James, looks like a wye could go there?
I like the looks of the ez track, ballasting is my absolute least favourite part of the hobby.

Your assumption is correct! There is going to be a wye placed there. See my humble plan attached. I am doing as design build as you go. I may tweek it a little more. I keep telling myself temporary layout but I also keep wanting to better my design for my purposes.

As for ballasting I feel you! I have made many adjustments on my techniques along the way. I will be posting how I tackle that when the time comes. It works well for me. The EZ track is nice for some people. I like it for this case as temporary use and even for template and for contemplating designs etc. I happen to have it for those reasons.

Well I did get the 2nd coat of paint done on the skyline. I am pleased with my color choice! Now I will finish with the shelving/valance above it which will house the LEDs. I will be doing fading colors of the blue skyline later and add clouds. I will share how I do it when the time comes. I like darkening the skyline on the lower half and using lighter colors on the upper half. fade to fade with clouds spread through the spectrum. It gives perspective/vantage points for distance etc. So ya it's nice to have color now on the wall it makes the locomotives and the cars pop!

I got the north wall and the last half of the west wall (right side of the window) 1st coat of paint on tonight. One more coat and then I will focus on the shelving/valance, brackets and LED lights. After that I will paint the deck/plywood. I worked on a few car kits putting kadees and metal wheels on while taking a break on the painting. I will finish up Saturday afternoon. I have a few errands to run in the morning. lol Ya I know I am posting this at 4:04 AM EST right now. lol I will sleep a few hours and up at it @ 8am.

I have yet to deal with changing out of the panel in front of the window. I should be able to get that done Sunday.

Here are a few pics of the painting progress.

I finished the 2nd coat of blue on the north wall etc...pulled the tape. Turned out pretty good and I am happy with the results. Now I need to deal with the window panel area. I didn't get to the shelving brackets as the pain with the 7 mm stone was giving me havoc. Surgery is on Dec 7th D-Day.
Slow & steady I go...after the surgery I should be able hit the after burners and get more done.

Just caught up with this thread after not having time to read it for a few days. Excellent progress. I see that you model like me! Trains everywhere and no scenery yet, as well as unfinished spurs. ;)

Actually the EZ track you see there is temporary. It's more or less a pacifier until I start laying code 83 track. ;)

JR's UPRR has made another power purchase...

GP-39 non turbo in ASAB livery coming from Utica NY. It should arrive no later than Tuesday 12-08-2020.

We shall see how it looks in person once it arrives. Supposedly the paint is an accurate color scheme. Proto details are minimal though.

The locomotive number is 507.

It should look similar to this prototype picture here:

I will post an update. No work this weekend as I am taking it easy and preparing for my surgery Monday relaxation and hydration is key.

JRs UPRR management has received a "new" TIMKEN ROLLER FREIGHT #37250TRB a 40' Boxcar. It was received by UP #DS 1003 switcher. It came in on the south in bound main track #2. It will be shoved immediately to the wheel shop for a quick service on replacing all the original wheels. It will join a dozen other Timken boxcars that exclusively handle all the receivership & distribution of Timken bearings and Timken accessory parts.

Management is very happy to have another "billboard" Timken car in their stable!

Here she is in the not so typical color red & white scheme.

Good morning Alco,
Most importantly is I am glad you are on the mend!
What may I ask is the significance of the timken boxcars, I have heard of timken bearings, are they just a better quality more rare type of car ?
