A new beginning...JRs UPRR.

Well more news is a coming! Management has acquired a few more new locomotives to add to the stables. After completing the purchase of a Dash 8 #9077 and GP35 WP #3003 recently. Which those units will be making a more official debut later. Management has decided on another GP 35 to run in a consist with WP #3003 GP35 and well it's in a different paint scheme but still WP. It's a GP 35 WP #3006. She will make a nice addition to the fleet. She already has a decoder waiting for her when she arrives. Management has obtained a dozen decoders a week ago and is making upgrades to the existing fleet and the new acquisitions. The goal is to have all locomotives on the roster converted to DCC this coming winter. That will take a huge undertaking but it nice to set the goals. I have the locos in order of how I will attain this feat. All DCC ready locos will be first as they are easier to do naturally since we are talking plug-n-play then I will follow up with all BB Athearns. Yes, I love my BB Athearns and I will never rid of them they're solid work horses if you tune them right. The rest...Katos, Stewarts and Proto 2000s will follow. As for sound my plan is that ALL switchers in the yard will have sound unless it is consisted with another switcher. On the GPs SDs Alcos and other road units they will likely only have one per consists as well and if it runs on its own I will add sound to it.

Another switcher has been purchased recently for a great deal. Once again from someone in Florida who is getting out of the hobby. Funny thing is I have been looking for one of these switchers that was in good shape or like new. Well all that searching and waiting for the right one paid off. JRs UPRR has bought it's first ever Fairbanks-Morse H15-44 UNION PACIFIC #DS 1329. This puppy is brand spanking new in the box and never ran on a layout! It's an Atlas Master Series model #9509. (UP had 5 units and all of these were fitted with steam generators.) So the crew here is very excited for this particular purchase and is now waiting with enthusiasm to get it on it's new home tracks!

This Fairbanks-Morse H15-44 UNION PACIFIC #DS 1329
Features:
  • Bi-directional red and green LED marker lamps that work in DCC and analog mode
  • Realistic die-cast underframe
  • Five-pole skewed armature motor with dual flywheels for optimum performance at all speeds
  • Directional lighting
  • Factory-equipped with AccuMate® knuckle couplers
  • Painted crew figures
  • Separately-installed scale windshield wipers and fine scale handrails
  • Separately-applied coupler cut levers and trainline hoses
  • Separately-applied fuel tank skirt as appropriate by railroad
  • Etched metal radiator grilles
  • AAR-B or FM-style truck sideframes as appropriate by railroad

I wish it was a Gold series but it isn't....Gold version would have sound equipped with ESU Loksound pictures will come when she arrives!

The next acquisition is in the works now is an Alco...go figure! This one is loaded! It has sound and all the flash ya need! This Alco is the one that will bring in the freight from the north line ALCO C424 Ph.2 - GB&W - Green Bay & Western #313!!! She's a dandy! We will follow-up when this is completed for pictures etc. Maybe even with a second unit to run with this one? Definitely will be an Alco as well. hmmm.....

Well in other news. The town of Eagle, (which does exist in WI but not in UP territory but it's my layout) did get it's water tower a while ago. It also has a CAT dealership! The new building has been acquired and lots and lots of CAT equipment. Generators, construction vehicles, signs, trucks you name it.... it's going down in this town! Lowboys galore pulled by Peterbuilts and KWs to handle the freight coming in from the equipment coming from Muncie and Lafayette, Indiana.

More rolling stock acquisitions seems to be a constant at the moment. Management has a way of sniffing out a good deal and finding them. No rock is left unturned. As for the motive power, well we are pretty close to being finished with the roster. We are looking for 1 more Alco for the GBW. We may even get another Alco that is Alco #5 that ran in the Schenectady Shops...we will see. I would like to get one switcher in the Marinette Tomahawk & Western as well. Management is also still trying to acquire the complete fleet of SD70ace heritage units in the Athearn Genesis series. Currently we have 2..... SP and CNW. That will take a while. Also 4 new steamers. Yup ya heard right steamers. I will save that conversation for another day. The steamers will all be UP. Currently we do have 17 steamers on the roster. None with DCC unfortunately. That just about sums it up. Until next time...we will be back with some action shots with adventures of Doc & Wyatt and crew working JR's UPPR. Peace!

Here we go folks the herd has grown!

The guys here Wyatt and Doc are estatic about all the newly acquired power and rolling stock!

Here we have Wyatt showing off the Fairbanks-Morse H15-44 UNION PACIFIC #DS 1329 we need to make a little adjustment on the rear fan grate as something is popping it up. All in all it's a great runner! The guys love the lighting options on this unit too.

GP40 Low Nose Rio Grande #3141

Stay tuned.....we will be pulling in some of the wood chip hoppers and propane tankers.........

Peace

As I said we would be back tonight messing around in the yard.....Wyatt climbed aboard GP 35 UP #745 brand spanking new to us! Sweet little geep!

A little tib bit of history for the funky BLACK road number:

November 1980 - 20-inch Cab-Side Numbers

During early 1980, UP began using video cameras at its major yards and terminals. Many bugs had to be worked out, including the fact that due to the cameras' low resolution, the vertical handrails on locomotives interfered with the visibility of road numbers on the hood sides. To improve visibility to video cameras, the 20-inch red road numbers on the hood sides (first used in late 1975) were moved to the cab sides, and the black edging was changed from 5/16-inch to 1/2-inch.

On the rear, the previous UP initials and number as 6-inch red letters and numbers, with 3/16 inch black edging, remained unchanged.

Although planned as early as May, the change did not take effect until November.

New units were still being delivered without lettering, so red numbers were used on these units' new cab-side location. The first new units known to receive the new red 20 inch numbers on their cab sides include the 36 SD40-2s delivered in October and November 1980, numbered as 3769-3804, along with the four upgraded SD40-2s, 3805-3808. Based on photo research, the first unit to receive red cab-side numbers appears to be 3779, completed by UP's Omaha shops in mid November 1980.

At first, the new cab side placement used red 20-inch numbers, with 1/2 inch edging replacing the previous 5/16 inch black edging. The thicker edging on the 20-inch red numbers did not solve the video visibility problem, so the numbers were changed to all-black.

November 1980 - 24-inch Nose Medallion

At the same time as the change to 20-inch cab side numbers, the placement of the 24-inch medallion was changed from its location on the cab side, right below the cab window, to being centered on the low nose at the front of the unit (replacing the earlier combination of 8-inch Union Pacific lettering, and 6-inch UP initials and road number).

December 1980 - Black Cab-Side Numbers

UP's Painting, Lettering & Numbering drawing for black 20-inch numbers is dated May 13, 1980. In preparation for the change in the location of road numbers, there were two general arrangement drawings for typical units with cab-side numbers, both were completed on November 26, 1980. Both drawings show an SD40-2 and a C30-7 with 20-inch numbers, and an SW10 with 16-inch numbers. One drawing shows the units with red numbers, and the other drawing shows the same units with black numbers. UP's Chief Mechanical Officer, J. F. McDonough, instructed all locations in a letter dated December 11, 1980 to begin using the new paint scheme.

No official record was kept of units that received black numbers, because they were completed in accordance with the painting and lettering specification in effect at the time. Photographic research shows that units repainted between late November 1980 and late April 1981 received black numbers on their cab sides. An incomplete list includes:

ModelRoad Number
SD45UP 1, 19, 46
SD45MUP 60
SD24MUP 99
GP7UP 112
GP9UP 180, 188, 231, 265, 336, 338, 345
SD24UP 425
GP35UP 745
GP30UP 859
NW2UP 1039
SW10UP 1214, 1215, 1216, 1217, 1218, 1219
GP38-2UP 2005, 2028, 2036, 2043
SD40-2UP 3215, 3243, 3292
The on-going completion of SW10s during this time frame gives a close indication of the period that black numbers were being applied. UP 1214, 1215, 1216, 1217, 1218 were completed between January and April 1981, all with black numbers. UP 1219 was first released in mid April with black numbers, but was returned to Omaha shops for some final mechanical adjustments. When it was released a week later, it had red numbers, with 1/2-inch black edging. UP 1220 was completed in late April with red numbers.

So here we are. Being that JR's UPRR like the unusual stuff that UP has had........

Management will be upgrading the couplers and adding a snow plow on the unit as well as visors for the windows. This unit will be dedicated to yard duty......

Well Doc got to drag the tunnel motors.....he pulled the newly acquired woodchip hoppers to add to our fleet. The SP #8529 tunnel unit has the traditional SP lighting which is one of the reasons why this unit was purchased. (the decoder has not been installed on this unit yet but it will be awesome with the lighting configurations etc.) So this will always be MUed to UP #4945. Sure looks great!

Then we also got the "mini me" of the tunnel motor.......

GP 15-1 UPY #559 management loves this one too as it has all the bells and whistles on this baby. (Genesis with sound etc) This will be comfort for guys in the yard.....

Wyatt hopped into this unit to show off the propane tank cars for JR Fuels that will provide plenty of fuel service for the locals.....

So tonight I felt like being a little productive in the train room. I got the 1st phase of the LED lighting up and installed. Basically a rough-in. I have yet to do the trim out on the installation of the valance in front of the LEDs as well as tidy up the wires a bit. I have this plugged in to a controlled wall outlet switch. The LED light system came with a switch and dimmer system which I really like. I am very happy with the results and I have 3 lights left over that I will use above the workbench. So phase 2 will be trim out and tidy up wires. Phase 3 will be install 2 LED lamps on ceiling in the center of the room. These are pendants that I will make from old oil RR lanterns that I have with LED bulbs. I can't wait to do that next. Here are some pictures. Excuse the the mess as it has not been cleaned or organized all summer. That will be addressed soon as it cools down a bit. Later.....

Finally the GP40 Low Nose Rio Grande #3141 rolled in on a delayed schedule but Doc & Wyatt did give it a thumbs up! Brand spanking new!

Runs like a Swiss watch!

Management could not pass up the price with the decoder setup either the price was too good to not purchase it.......see tag on the delivery box 😁

Here she is......maintenance crew had to make an adjustment on the decoder board and move the jumper from anaolog to DCC. Pre-programmed to #41 which will later get re-programmed to 3141 when the program track is set-up. Gotta love these Atlas locos. No sound on this unit. I am learning that having a bunch of sound locos can be a bit to much at times....so every couple units will have sound as I make my transition to all locos being DCC as mentioned before my process will be all over the road units will have sound depending on the lash ups etc. The yard will vary too. It can be overwhelming at times. I know when I have the larger layout in the future this will not be an issue but on this small temporary layout is a but much. The maintnenance guys will throw the snow plow on as well as it did come with this unit in the freight box.

So here we have #3141 rolling through with the custom "heritage" boxcars that were acquired this past spring and tagging along is the caboose looking sharp. This unit #3141 will see jobs on the road with GP 40 Cotton Belt SSW #7277 which was ordered recently and should be here in a few days.

Ah some excitement going on here in the yard. Word got out the ES44AC has finally arrived! Wyatt & Doc are eagerly waiting for it's arrival. The bossman is bringing her in! Yup just so the fellas can drool as it rolls in. JR's UPRR is very proud to have this locomotive. (even though it's a fantasy scheme and it didn't happen in the real world but it did here!) This makes another addition to the Heritage fleet! The gang even brought out the SD70ACe Southern Belle to greet the Widow!
