I'd like to incorporate this into whatever I decide to do in a layout. It would turn around a train and head it in the opposite direction. I'm beginning to find Google Earth very useful. I can check out different things in my area, such as the San Bernardino intermodal yard and all the sidings along the 10 frwy., along with the Cahon Pass area.

That's called a balloon loop and it will work fine if you have the space for decent size curves, which is the usual problem with balloon loops. You also have an electrical reverse loop that will have to be dealt with by using automatic reversers or the appropriate gapping, wiring, and toggle switches.
