One of the many things about this hobby I love so much is mirroring real life operations. As such my layout was designed for operation....
the K&L is a fictional Michigan shortline connecting Kalamazoo with the state Capitol Lansing. Its main reason for being is to "bridge" PRR traffic from K-Zoo to the Lansing Manufactors Beltline as well as serve local industries (some of which are named for friends and family)
here is a day on the K&L in photos...trains are moved by timetable and cars are forwarded by my own carcard system..
here is the main yard across the Kalamazoo River from downtown which will be filling some area towrds the window...known as Enfield Yard. Its 7am and the PRR have left 2 cuts of cars on the "old main" and siding to be switched out
first moves we see is the hostler wyeing #151 for the mornings Gull passenger run to Lansing
the AM yard job then comes out to start on the PRR interchange cars
right on time we see the Gull passing P Jct tower northbound to Lansing for the first of 3 round trips
meanwhile the yard job has the first northbound frieght ready for its 8 am departure...yard job clearing in the yard for train #10's power..a leased PM 1200 class 2-8-4
on the "old main" and airing up for airtest #10 with PRR cars for Lansing
55 minutes and 47 miles later train #10 comes thru Richland
1 hour after #10 leaves Enfield #20 the Vermontville Turn departs leaving Pennsy shared track at P Jct
with the road jobs gone the yard job does some local switching...
first some l.c.l. cars at the K&L Enfield Freighthouse
then a run out to Parchment to switch Gooderham's Fuel
then finally the yard job runs the "Fruit Loop" which is a downtown switch job to serve as yet unmodeled industries including the Kalamazoo Fruit Union hence the name....for now it runs to a storage track
