I have 2 questions.

1. What colors does Amtrak use on the current schem (PV/shamu)? Does polly scale or scale coat make anything close to it or does any company?

2. Which PRR color would look best on a modern locomotive, the PRR Burgandy or the Brunswick green?

Amtrak's Phase V silver color is called "Platinum Mist", I've never found a blue, so, sadly I cannot help you there...

Thanks Josh. I guess I can get a decent jar of that paint since NJT uses platinum mist aswell. The blue is giving me trouble. I had someone at work take a look at the walthers PV blue in the catalog then asked him to look at 5 of the blues in the scalecoat color chart. I just can't remember which one he picked.

Thats pretty much what I would do. I print colors, then spend ~20 mins looking at all the colors at the LHS. They carry the Model Masters line as well, and it has tons of shades of blue & gray...

The only problem is most the stores here by me dont have a large selection of paint. One store has only Tamiya. The store I love has polly scale i believe only. The other store I know of has very little paint in stock.

Kinda wish there was a walthers store to visit, kinda like Summit Racing for auto parts.

I just did a little more researching and found another board that said about using Floquil "Light Blue". http://www.railroad.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=59157

Well to be honset looking at my EMD F59PHI #453 it loos more of Floquil CSX Blue (270-110352). And the Platinum Mist (270-110144)

Those are the colors im using on my F40PH's projects. You can view the F59PHI on my youtube video or on athearn website. Holding the locomotive to the paint samples in the Walthers referance book is how I figure its that one

CSX blue is too dark. It's better to match the decals so that it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb

Matching the model to a book is not the best idea. Printer ink only comes in so many colors.

Yeah, those colors shown in the books, a lot of the times aren't very close to the actual color you will get in the bottle!!!

well i found out that the actual color used on phase V is "pantone 302c". I've thought about buying a jar of it from one of Pantone's authorized dealers to see if I could use it.

Or find out if Lowes or Home Depot sells those really small sample jars with acryllic paint and bring my model to them to match the blue.

The problem is, Pantone is an industry standard on colors. However, besides house paint, no one really makes paint that follows the pantone color system.

If you can get the actual color of the decals, and bring it to your local home depot, or a paint store like sherwin-williams, they can scan it and mix up a matching color.

Another good place to go is an automotive shop where they can scan the paint, and sell you a can of automotive paint designed for plastic bumpers.

Never used anything besides pollyscale or Floquil. How well do these other paints from home depot or elsewhere spray? I am looking to do a Amtrak project for someone and am looking for good colors as well.

house paints are not meant to be sprayed and will be very thick.

the automotive plastic bumper paint will work as it is meant to be sprayed

I do have the decals. Pantone does make an acryllic paint but i dont want to buy a gallon of it.
