I just uploaded my sixteen car 20th Century Limited layout tour video on youtube. The train will eventually make 3 station stops but for now running at track speed it takes a little over 7 minutes to make the round trip.
Dang, George, that's a really impressive train and layout. Anyone that keep 16 Walthers passenger cars on the track that long should get some kind of gold medal for good trackwork. The only complaint I have is those engines are way too loud. Maybe it's the way you had the mike pointed or something but the engines sounded just as loud on the front of the train as they did on the end.
Actually Jim I had two freights idling on track 2 wondering if I should run them by the 20th Century for some effect but decided against it. That’s most likely is where the other noise is coming from. Over the last year I made a commitment to fix any bad track work and as you can see it has paid off with smooth running trains. I just bought one Budd 73’ baggage car and five Budd 52 seat coaches to expand the train to sixteen cars. I know these Budd coaches run smooth and usually don’t derail. They were on sale for $19.95 at Walthers. The smooth sided gray coaches seem to be more of a problem as far as derailing goes but you have to throw one in here and there to break up the look of the train, otherwise it looks kind of bland. I want to add one more car one of those new nice looking smooth sided two tone gray US mail cars.
Ah, that's why I could always hear engine noise. Makes sense now. Your video certainly does show the value of laying perfect trackwork. I'd venture a guess that not one large layout in 100 could handle that train those helixes with no derailments.
Gorgeous. I like what I see there. While scale speed operating tends to drive me crazy, you've made it an artform there with the long freight drags and winding tracks!
What is your min. curve radius? The first curve and the last one seem to be the tightest. Looks awesome, I hope to have a nice layout like that someday.
