This was a second version before we hit the forums we were already into the cannot be flat earth
we had a raised area to hide the curves, home made tunnels made from anything that came to hand often packaging material which was free. raised areas initiated only to hide tight unnatural curves

a few pieces were cut from the base boards to add water or raised tracks, and the greenery well less said, certain as;vets improved but the main station on the left aka Goathland was pretty limited we had placed the buildings down and cut to suit from sone pictures we had of the real thing.
Then a new set of buildings came out and the emphasis was on the back of the building…and this made us pause, and then sone extra pictures of the reverse of the station became available to us, we decided to tear the lot out, start again, and whilst at use things we learned but had no incentive to incorporate. we also used Google maps to size the area.

this was two boards split in height by a couple of inches and then plaster cast draped and coloured, look and you can see the holes from the material that always annoyed me so that had to go too
1. We decided we needed a strong base especially for the tracks, we used insulation sheets, which we had come across when insulating the loft

the foam was light weight if a bit dusty and easy to lift and carve

it took colour easily
and you co uld imbed component like bridges and push in ‘trees’

It was a bit like Lego, plus if required could be lifted off to inspect track if work was required

You could layer it, fyi if you remove one metal side remove both, because in hot weather the metal can cause movement and twisting of the sheets,as I found to my cost.
I went with s light earth colour which would show through once I grassed, and the foam was good for texturing, a sanding block gave me roads, and breakages made natural ground

i loosel abutted the foam,no fixing was required, and layering was simple

I tried cutting it upright, not my best effort,

a grey wash improved it no end imo

and the top of the tunnel

if at first you do not succeed try try again is my motto

Then I just needed to join the elements together, and the scenic detail ie greenery helped out immensely

my hand cut was a tad wonky

the cut away was achieved purely by darkening the colour near the water, and the ‘grass’ leaning over

the texture of the wall and it’s ‘stones’

In my experience, the more you add, the more layers, each striving to imitate its own aspect you begin to build to a cohesive model if recognisable elements.
Even the trees were hand made to emulate the specific trees, not great on close inspection- I have planned to improve this time has never allowed.
