"Holy mackerel Andy! I'm surprised!

When my pancreatitis was at its worst, I was given weeks to live. When I could tolerate eating, I could count on a McDonalds hamburger to make me feel a little better. It never came up or, in my case, moved too quickly through.

The "heathy" diet the doctor put me on nearly killed me. She gave up and told me "Eat whatever you can". That was about 15 years ago and I'm still here! :)

Hi Louis, For sure we all need to take a close look and evaluate what Drs tell us or prescribe for us by reading through the information in the possible side affects !! I've had some sort of minor infection in my Left leg. The Physicians Assistant I see, who consults(?), and is directed by an MD(?), a couple of months ago prescribed an antibiotic, 'Doxycycline' (I think that's spelled correctly) I took six of the little pills and then decided to read the possible side affects sheet. One of them was may cause 'Permanent Blindness' that can happen months later !! ??
I stopped taking any more right then and dumped the other 16 pills down the toilet !! WTF is wrong with peoples mind-set to even consider prescribing a medication such as that? ?? ??? And we're suppose to put our trust and faith in them ? Bullshit !!

I wonder if it's because you observe the golden rules.

1. The wife is always right.
2. When she's wrong, refer to rule 1. 🤣

Congratulations 🎊
Oh Balderdash!

Divorce is expensive, monetarily and emotionally, (been there 2X) but doing the same thing year in, year out expecting different results is the definition of insanity.

Blessed are you that got it right, or reasonably right the 1st time. It took a few times, but we got it right, we work together and she is not always right. After all, even a blind squirrel finds a nut now, and then!😁

I was on Doxicyclene for years. It's a common antibiotic. Your chances of going blind from it, well let's just say you've got a better chance of hitting Mega Millions and being struck by lightning at the same time. The only problem I ever had with it was taking it on an empty stomach (which I was instructed not to do). You'll probably blow your chow if you do that. You ought to read some of the side effects for Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy drugs if you want to read a real horror story. If one person in 5 billion might have that reaction, they have to disclose it, so they don't get sued. Many of these side effects are so rare that they can't even tell you how often they occur and are usually a result of being allergic to the drug. Classic "Too Much Information" syndrome. In general, I prefer the advice of my doctor who trained for 8-12 years and knows my case.

Morning all,

Congrats on the 56 years Mikey! The wife and I will be at 40 this year.

Currently 22° and clear, rumors of some rain\snow mix overnight. Nothing done on the trains yesterday. Spent the day mostly relaxing? I will say I'm starting to get a serious case of the "it's time to retire". Don't expect much today yet. So hopefully it will stay pretty quiet...calm before the storm.

Patrick, sorry but I can’t seem to think of you being retired. Maybe it’s just time to take one of those jobs you have been interviewing for.

I loved my real full time job for 19 of the 21 years I worked in my brother’s company. The last 2 years, despised going in. I pushed myself to retirement at 62. No real regrets for me but for many that’s too young. Fortunately after a month fully retired I had our side business to really get into and thankfully my trains.

Prior to my other half, who when we disagree I agree to disagree, or I go sulk for a day or two, especially if there’s no way he’ll admit he’s wrong, or God forbid I can’t win lol. he on the other hand has totally forgotten the argument five..well 15 minutes after it has stopped.
I have resorted to get him to sign an agreement or recorded us and once would only communicate via email, so he could not change his story. when I get it wrong it is just an honest mistake……grins……and best forgotten…which he does so easily anyway.
I admit one time, sulking I was so involved doing a painting,I forgot why I sulked, but he still got the dirty look, and had to make his own tea until a suitable time had passed.
It is true I do not go out of my way to be bitchy (cross fingers), it is true I sulk if I believe he was wrong and I was right, and he hates if I bring out photographic evidence or written evidence to something a good decade old lol.
But when ever either of us is doing something we consult the other take note of their positive and negative points, even if squabbling does erupt lol.

Annoying? Moi?

My sons latest girlfriend, marriage has been discussed, fingers crossed, really likes me and I get lots of cuddles and hugs….smug look.
As we meander around the house, the other half and I often eye ball, smile, laugh, or pull the other in for a hug or a cuddle, so I think we have a few more years in the bank, God willing.

Good morning from So. Central Wisconsin. 21f degrees now feeling like 13 heading to 31. Maybe 1” of white ground cover.

I have been off the workbench since Friday. I did walk into the hobby room 3 times but just to get a soda pop out of the refrigerator. I feel good and will head back to the bench sometime this morning. I was approaching weathering burnout, so I took a break. I knew that when I re-organized the bench twice in 3 days it was time to stop. Last night took some will power on my end though to stay out.

Thankfully the Cowboys lost. I felt a slight bit of pain for Coach McCarthy, he is a good guy. Saw maybe 20 minutes of the Cowboy/49er game, none of the Bills/Bengals, none of the Giants/Eagles and the4th quarter of the Jags/Chiefs. I just have not had the TV monitor on very much the last couple weeks.

Terry is home. Came in last night with the SIL picking her and her best friend up at the Middleton airport about 12 miles away. Pat the friend will drive home to Racine today. Both have a nicely golden tan but not the rich tan they used to carry as when we were in our 20’s and 30’s.

Some morning chores for me, vacuuming, before I head to the bench. Terry is out checking on her horses. She says she will start baking this afternoon. Oh boy…

enjoy the day

Good Morning where it is currently 37f and looking for a 60 degree high with bright sunny skies.

Watched too much football this past weekend. A little disappointed with a couple outcomes, but WTH - I really don't have a dog in the hunt - however I'll side with K.C. I just hope that Mahomes did not damage his ankle; with his ability to scramble it would be a real blow to his game if he is unable?

Congrats to you MIKEY and others who have decades of spouses under their belt. The Spousal Unit and I are sneeking up on 33 this year - I just wish we had met 25 prior.
My parents made it to 70 years when my mom passed at 86. My dad cried like a baby when she went and was not the same person afterwards.

I'm just rambling and really do not have much intelligent to say - take care - I'll be back, hopefully.

Shadow? I like your bridges and water - beautiful work! You got a real name?

Brown eggs were cheaper yesterday then the normal white ones we buy, so I purchased a dozen. I am going to crack open a couple in a few minutes

Chad - All I purchase is brown eggs any more. I raised my own chickens from 1980-1996 and they were all brown egg layers. We briefly went back to white eggs from the grocery store, but that didn't last long.

Went to Costco on Friday. The 2 dozen "cage free" white eggs were $6.49. The 2 dozen "cage free / Omega-3" eggs brown were $5.89. I buy the omega eggs anyway but if I am just buying eggs (not the omega ones as they are not available) I buy whatever is cheapest. White or brown. I don't care. But I will buy cage free or free roam or whatever over the store factory eggs if the price difference is not that much... (Like now -- the basic store eggs are almost as expensive at places like Walmart as the "fancy" [cage free / free roam] eggs)

8AM and 15F. Been 15F since 6AM when I got up. Coldest I've seen in a while in the morning. Snowed yesterday an inch or there but light dry snow due to being colder. Also early last week it snowed one day the nice light dry snow. According to the weather guesser app on my phone the next 10 days are mostly listed as cloudy of some sort but no precipitation chances shown. Mostly cold though with just a day or two showing a high above freezing. Need a few extra days in the mid 30s or higher.

Saturday we did get another section of the initial foam layer of the main floor done. Took several hours as the first layer we have to go over the existing foam and get all the dirt, gravel, concrete, ice etc out and install some rebar (in some places) as well as the steel straighteneer ladder pieces. Had to cut and bend a little rebar. I have the door location marked but not cut yet. I need to cut the door still but want to do it differently this time to avoid issues with straightness. Have not yet put the rebar and stuff into this first layer. Just the foam.

This week I want to get the rest of the initial foam layer done everywhere except by the garage where we need the pour in first. Try an hour or two daily at lunch time... Same clean and fixing up of the existing foam needs to happen but hopefully a little easier as further away from where all th egravel was being thrown and made a mess when we did the basement slab.

The second and higher layers will be a much faster deal...

David: Doxycycline is only supposed to be given in 7 to 10 day courses. Any more, and it loses effect. Any leg infection that lasts more than a couple of weeks is a more serious condition... If the condition persists, you should see an infectious disease specialist, not a P.A.

Good Morning All. Clear here and 28°, going up to 54° later on. Mixed weather for the next ten days with tomorrow being the worst with mixed rain and snow, and a temperature of 40°± until Wednesday after sunrise. If there is any snow, it won't accumulate or stick since the temperature is supposed to remain above freezing. Of course, tomorrow is the last doctor appointment for a couple of months.

My neighbor up the road, Bubba, came down yesterday and picked up my tiller to overhaul and tune up. It had been giving me some minor issues in the last couple of years, and this year it was cranking but not starting. He has his home-based small engine repair business going on at the house and I know that he will appreciate the extra income from me. Plus, small gasoline engines have never been friendly with me. Tell me what's wrong and I can fix it. But diagnosing the problem has always been hard for me.
Meanwhile I cut the last branch up that I pruned last winter and had left on the ground in the back 40. Yield was 12-3" x 18" logs and a bunch of smaller kindling. I have already started on next years supply.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I mainly opened up and tuned up the three ATSF cabooses that I bought at the train show Saturday. They all went through my standard pre-layout routine; weigh and add if needed, ream out the trucks with the truck tuner, check coupler height, etc. In the case of all three of these, I had to disassemble the body/frame to replace the McHenry couplers (now called EZ Mates that are standard on all Athearn RTR) with Kadee #148's. Added all cars to the inventory database/spreadsheet including the maintenance.
IMG_2839.JPG

While they initially look the same, there are differences in the blanked-out window pattern and car body markings.
IMG_2846.JPG

They all roll a little bit better now, although I have never really had a problem with truck flash in Athearn models.

Now, where the hell did I put those Dust Monkeys that I add to all cabooses???

Joe - My toolbox is used less and less often as I advance in years. Cars have gotten too complex and I am limited to oil changes, brake pad replacement, wiper blades, some filters and spark plugs. I still have all of the tools for electrical and plumbing work around the house (mine only), but I rarely need to repair anything any more. Installing the tankless water heater a couple of years ago was hopefully my last biggie. But I am prepared. Since I no longer go on the roof, in the attic, or under the house, some tools are now obsolete for me. Wife forbid all when I turned 70!:) But other than the tap & drill set that was given to me, I never purchased a tool that I didn't use often.
David - I have taken Doxycycline before without any of the published side effects. I think that as Alan posted, it's a CYA situation.

Everybody have a great day.

I had a dose of Karma this weekend. Not the bad kind. By way of background, I'm a recovering alcoholic, coming up on 4 years since I've put alcohol in my body. I'm not militant about it, my wife drinks wine daily. I just needed to stop. So, now that that's out of the way...

I like to help people with addiction issues, especially if they are already somewhat successful in staying clean.

Last week, I listed a couple Samsung sound bars for sale on a local Facebook Market page. A guy asked if I was willing to trade. I said, "about the only thing I need is time. I have several things around here that I could probably fix if I just had the time to try, like fixing the rear PTO on my tractor." I know what's wrong with it, but I don't have the right sockets to get to it. I don't even know what size I need because I can't reach back into the recesses to measure it.

Turns out he's a mechanic, and has a lot of experience working on John Deere hydraulics.

Between the tractor, the ignition switch on my ancient zero-turn, my wife's brakes, golf cart starter acting up, etc, etc... I had at least 4-5 things that a mechanic could do standing on his head, and that I can do, but I just don't have the time.

I got my tractor's rear PTO valve fixed, new brakes on my wife's car, the oil changed on my wife's '67 Chevy truck, and he's looking at replacing some parts on a chainsaw... all for $100 cash, 2 sound bars that I no longer need, and an old 65" TV that no longer works on wifi.

Turns out the guy is 2.5 years sober. He had the socket I needed (1 and 1/16 inch deep socket). He also took apart the valve for teh rear PTO and fixed it. It took longer to get to the part and get it off than it did to stip it and clean it all out. A roll pin had drifted itself out, preventing one of the pistons from moving within the valve. Simple fix, but that would have taken me hours, if not days to reverse engineer the thing myself.

He's coming out again this coming week to work on the starter of our 16 year old gas powered golf cart, and to trouble shoot a gremlin with one of our 4-wheelers.

God works in mysterious ways!

Willie: I don't even work on cars any more, since I traded in the Monte Carlo in 2016. I generally take the Caddie into Cadillac twice a year, for oil changes and the like. I still do things around the house. I changed a light fixture in the basement a couple of weeks ago. Just takes me longer. Hopefully I'm up to a few projects outside that need to be done this spring...
