different ballast sizes and colours
Goathland has had several different road surfaces and recently it had blocks added, but because of the change in surface level I used the ‘gravel’ look
items such as bins have been weathered so they blend in

I added the white, dirty white for reflections, and ran thinned black on the post box and the telephone box, once a very common sight, their last versions were a more forgettable blue and grey this are now oddities as mobile phones have made them obsolete, but many people acquire them for their homes, just because, on the letterbox see the black for where the letter goes in adding depth
fyi I also repainted lights on the cars improving them, often a very thin wash of black vastly improves the ’look’

the real thing running in preservation, although in the past the colours were green there are old photographs around that show this, but I use this era as it fits with the television series that filmed here and the Harry Potter film that also filmed here
you can see various items such as milk churns and named benches,as well as the lovely period lights, the platform bridge was not original it was bought in when it was bought back to life by the preservation society and they had to adhere to more stringent health and safety regulations, the capital coaches over to the left in this period are usually green and white and a re-edit le hotel rooms, although with Covid at the moment I suppose they too are hit

at present on this side thee is still a little bit of floating building syndrome, although this could be caused by the Harry Potter influence…..grins

this part of the layout still needs tweaking, but you can see that it is coming together

I originally did the layout exactly to scale as it has a short playform, but it quickly transpired that the tracks needed more room so the space between the platforms is wider than it should be, and I still struggle to get all the detail in, photographed in small chunks though rather than some of these views you. An away with pure bloody murder…..

although it has not been out of its box for a while, I do own the Hogwarts Express train, this is an earlier version of the layout before ripped it out and redoing it :D

even magical spiritual animals can be seen if you look hard enough, this is due a repaint as I think I had a brain wave and can do much better, Harry’s stag deserves a decent showing

Well I mentioned in the coffee shop my other half had a broken bone in his foot, and not to be outdone i now have a broken ankle and a dislocated knee, and need two weeks with no weight on my foot at all, they are seeing if healing starts satisfactory or taking me back in for an op to put in a plate and pins, he says if I try walking on it I might as well just let them do the op immediately and the crack is in a place it will definitely get a lot worse and be hard to pin and plate so STAY OFF THE FOOT, I have to keep the foot above my heart as the clot risk is an issue but said thanks to me losing weight this year and no family history I can elect to not have the stomach injections to thin my blood 10 over 10 days yuck. The plaster cast made me think of when I made my first layout using plaster cast as a basis I had the white one but they said it was too bulky and to just do the ankle and they would not do the knee as the foot is so much more important, a foot cast goes up the knee a knee brace goes down to the calf, the toe to mid thigh cast was so heavy i could barely move it and could only sit with my leg stuck right out, the trauma clinic doctor took one look at it and like with the wueeen of hearts shout off with it(s head) in minutes I was in the plaster room and it was gone and a smaller one in its p,ace the relief on my knee was immense and I can now carefully exercise it
they said
drink water to thin your blood protecting against clots
use inerprofen to help get the swelling down also helping prevent clots
i am eating ginger which supposedly helps thin blood
and I do not drink much usually so am visiting the loo regularly and carefully get me and thankfully the smaller cast in and out,
amd not not putting the cast on the grounf
keeping my toes above my heart to avoid clotd
amd resting my calf or anklle on a pillow
but not rest on the heel of the cast which apparently can cause problems
my poor husband and son are on a fast learning curve learning to look after all the animals,my husband says we definitely have too many animals!

this area is the cove and zollywood raf field nothing to do with the Goathland area and imaginary it hides track crossing from one side to the other and can slide out

Jaz- what a pleasure to visit Goathland with you.

I am impressed with the quality of modeling and the imagination you show in putting together your scenes.
Looking forward to seeing what else you will share with us. (In a couple weeks, STAY OFF your feet).

Thank you :) Mikey
because I usually work off real photographs I just look at the details in them and try to replicate, if I cannot buy the product I see if I can model it, and try to keep era specific items together or aged appropriately, I used to discuss with Orem members items I needed and we would see if someone had seen them or throw in ideas, I use plaster one to trial ideas as can be reminded with easy then if I think I have a workable idea I have a go, for instance bins, old metal, later plastic and of course bin bags, the early ones are fairly easy to source, and bin bags are just lumps with say a tied handle, for me the details that catch your eye improve the credability, and I pull good looking items forward and move less credible items backwards or obscure items like bases of moveable figures
binbags, black, green are usual some companies use a specific colour
i was making something else had some left over that would harden and be wasted and I knew this project needed doing doing a small sharp pencil was the tool, I just rolled the ‘bags’ and as they are not uniform it makes it really easy

Placed near a model bin they are immediately associated and recognised, the orange ones here are Sainsbury’s shopping bags easily recognised in England

enamel or acrylic paint works i favour acrylic you get a little shine

here in England one company hires out wood pallets and they paint them blue for identification hence blue not wood in this picture, I often pinch and add stones,or modelling debris with different sizes, the bits can end up somewhat large but the different sizes look better than everything the exact same size
Often superb layouts are just too picture perfect and need to be dirtier, any stuff I pull off when redoing I bag and then use to avoid super clean layout syndrome, and if overdone a quick sweep with a painter and decorators brush can tidy up, careful need tracks though, or if you have track for running cars along roads.

I am using old photographs, so am lying down with my foot in the air, I record almost everything so if I redo I have reference for myself to check against, so I have lots of reference, and if anyone has ideas of their own please please share, so I can cope or adapt.best part of a forum is finding ingenuity from modellers.

cobbled
104A3EE1-3210-4BBA-A160-122D5DD4735E.jpeg

part of the station has a cobbled area, I have use plastic sheets previously but I needed a level change and the impression of the track for the wagon, so I looked at this, many people use clay, modelling medium and an empty bic pen, but I wanted squares not circles, i trialled this and it immediately worked for me, as I could sone the nearby area giving the idea of a step up

I used a metal ruler as a cutting edge and a Stanley knife and/ Or a fine screwdriver and purposely allowed it to not be perfect which made it a lot easier to do, and the greenery could cover any mistakes had they occurred, the scale is a little large if I am honest but careful angles when photographing can minimise this and to be fair if the effect works people are impressed enough to not nit pick too much…thank god :)

On a side note, regards mistakes they do happen, and if enough time is invested it can be very frustrating, but you can usually hide a not too big mistake in various ways,
TIP cars plonked on top, or loose greenery,
I accidentally cut a road kerb too deep a car did not sit right on it, I was ready to have a hissy fit, when my brain went ding, I had been making water features and decided a nice little puddle could solve the issue, not only did it solve it it looked good and I used it again when I messed up…..bonus
TIP PVA glue or ‘water’ modelling can relevel an unfortunate sloped finish, by part filling the slope it can look even more realistic

left puddle filled a slight, deep right puddle because you would have one either side
TIP even cheap white PVA can make a shallow puddle, test it first on a waste piece to check it works sone glues are better than others.
TIP these water feature works well with ‘snow’

In the coffee shop here, we were talking about the expense, things add up fast, but there are things that can be taken and used.

If you see someone insulating there home and throwing the cut offs, if you do not have asthma or other breathing issues then grab them

expensive to buy, but loads get thrown away

this stuff is easy to carve, hoovers away, can be sanded but be cautious of the dust, do outside if you can or near an open window I just did it in easy bite sizes.
