The greenbrier logging and coal co

Got my first coat of plaster on the logging camp side. It looks better than the other side. Not sure why, just does. I will do another coat tomorrow. Let it dry overnight. Shots below

I didn't get much of anything done. I cut in all the pieces of buildings and ground to them. I still have to put the hotel on and the little red light house. I got sore quick so i quit for the day. A long way to go. Shots below.

Well, I got the first coat on the mountain where the logging camp will be. It will need more coats for sure. Had a hard time getting the newspaper to stay where i needed it. A second coat should let me fix anything that isn't like i want. I have about 10 photos but am showing a few for now. I like it. Turned out even better than i thought. Pics below, Smoke

Ok, I have the big mountain done. Its a bit lumpy but not bad enough to warrent more work. Whats left i can cover with trees. Now i finished the area between the tracks around the sawmill. Only thing there is where the track comes across the log dump. That track isn't there yet. Waiting for Kato to deliver the new flex track. Now...the right smaller mountain is a mess. Only one later of plaster on it, and i am not happy at all. Its needs a lot of work on it. Painting helped show the problems i had with it. Shots below. More later. Continued construction for sure, Smoke

Well, I have made corrections to the right side mountain. Left side is finished. The trestle is needing a bit of fixing. Not bad for a couple of weeks on this one. I really like this redo of my old layout. Shots of the repairs on the right mountain and that center section and the trestle.

Am getting the rock to shape to the mountain. The white in the photos are gonna be rock. The left side i went all the way up with brown as i am not sure how i am going to do that side yet. I also ave one spot behind the sawmill complex. Adding more rock will finish it. The right side will have rock with the earth. I want to finish the rock behind the sawmill before i do any of the rest. With that i can paint the river and pour the river itself. Gonna use Mod-Pog super gloss for the pour itself. I still need to find rocks for the river. Not finding much here to do it. Will keep looking. The four shots are a pan from left to right. Laters Smoke

I just hate it when things go south. I was going to use the same paints i used before when i did my last layout. Ran out of brown so i had to get another quart of that and the code is not in there computer anymore so i had to find something close. Now its the greys turn. I keep adding white to the grey i had to get and still having major issues with getting the color right. Anyway, I took a break and cleaned the track of the plaster dust and paint on the track. Ran trains on it. I need to get another video of that but not ready for it. gotta get it set up to do that. Later. The light grey on the mountain top is still to dark. When i give it the black wash for effect it won't stand out. Anyway you should be able to see what i am doing. Laters, Smoke

That's too bad. My Home Depot has the codes going back 20 years that I know of. Plus they put the customized label and a smear of paint on the top of each can. They have a little gizmo that they can use to scan the smear or any other paint sample and they are able to match it exactly. I believe that it is called a spectrophotometer.

I thought that wally world would too. I have the old code and paint drop. they couldn't read it. Same for the grey. Maybe because it was so old. Like 2013 in think. Dono. I got it but had to mix a bunch of my apple barrow white in it. Most of the white to get the grey i was after. I used the Pictures from my old layout to get the color. Thats as close as i can get it. I still think that its too dark. But whatever so i will be stuck with it.

This is with three coats of different color greys. I think can start doing washes of brown and grey. Shots below, Laters

Been Busy with Doctors so not much getting done. A bunch of little things happening on the layout. I have the old sand tower for steam that should work for diesels. I also had a old water tank that was up at the logging camp. its being repurposed for a fuel tank. Its not finished yet so i will show that later. Got the fence almost ready to plant for the Barn yard scene. I got the crane for the log loader, had to find it. It got lost and was about to order another one at 66 bucks and postage, But found it so that is glueing on the wheel stand. Got my spar pole ready to install. Placed the logging camp buildings i figured out how i want to set them up so when i get ready i have the photo to help me remember. I think that is all for now. Smoke

I was raised around sawmills and they logging camps. I took a couple of hikes to a couple of the logging camps. One was not used anymore and the other was still working. I loved the smells of the logs and at the sawmill the smells were even more pronounced. I when i had grown up worked in the sawmill. When i entered service i had to move away from that area. When i left the service i went back to the sawmill. After about 1 year it closed. I went to other areas working for different lumber yards. stores that were something like Home Depot but somewhat smaller. But the one i liked best had there own sawmill. We cut and planed wood to customers specs. They could also buy wood that was already cut to size. Then we had all the other stuff like paints and glass inside they had all the other stuff like tools and paddies, Sheet rock and about anything else that would be used to build houses and other structures.
When i started this layout, i was looking for a railroad like that used in Cass or Spruce W.V. I took several different towns and sawmills and combined to make mine. There is a active logging camp on the mountain. Sawmill and town below on the valley floor. The C&O R.R. comes up daily to pick up loads of lumber and drops off emptys. Logging cars go back and forth to the logging camp to keep the sawmill with wood to be made into whatever the customers want. There are short boxcars and flatbed cars bringing supply's to the camp. The logging rail is used 2 times a day and the sawmill runs all day. There are a store and post office there at the sawmill for the familys there. Back in the days they didn't have any roads. They had timber laid flat for folks to walk on as there was too much mud out around the sawmill. There was some folks that didn't work on the sawmill or logging camps but had some cabins around the sawmill area. Also there was a school/church for kids and church goers. Folks came and went and there was a single passenger car for them to come and go. The main line trains was there daily. I originaly planed to make the scenes with steam and had shays for it. But later decided to go with a late 50's to early 60's layout. Cass shut down in 1961 so that worked out fine. I run two RS-2's on the mains. I have a 44 tonner for the sawmill yard and two NW-2's for the logging runs.It has 11 turnouts and all run on dcc. This one is my 5th try and get the layout right. I had many issues with white beaded foam for my base. I did three other layouts on that foam and it took its toll on the layout. I started having issues with track and bad idea for a 3X5 foot layout. This one is 3X8 foot, so much better than before. I am running pink foam on this layout 3 inches in all. Its sitting on a plastic table that is very hard and very stable. Some of the things used in my older layouts worked on this one and some didn't so its been another learning experience. I guess thats about all. Any other questions? post them here and i will see what i can find about it. So far i have been working on this one for 3-4 months. I started this one early April Laters

Ground color makes a huge difference, looking good!
I love that sawmill tram track work with the turntables, there’s actually one at a lock and dam a little south of here.

Its getting there. I pretty much finished whats on my desk. Taking a break for awhile. Not feeling all that good. Shots below.
