Athearn Genesis Challenger issues

I have an older, (MRC probably) Athearn HO Genesis Challenger. (#3985)

It's essential "dead" and un-responsive to any commands. I've tried reprogramming CV 8 to 8 (and to 143, mfgr ID #). No luck...

She last ran quite well, but might have been consisted at some point while she was at the club and I was not around. (The club runs NCE).

Any suggestions before I ship her off to Athearn?
 
There's a factory reset on those decoders, try setting CV29 to 6, this should reset it. If that does not work, then try CV125 with a setting of 1.

I'm holding off replacing the decoder so I can try shipping it back...
 
If it was me and I had to do it over again, I would save myself the time (4 months there and back), about $20 S&H and just put a sound unit in. However I understand the simple idea that you pay "X" amount for the unit and it should work like it was intended. Good luck and keep us informed.
